How To Grow Magic Mushrooms

Mushrooms have been a part of human consumption for thousands of years, and with time, their benefits and uses have only increased. From culinary use to their medicinal benefits, mushrooms have always been a popular choice.

Magic mushrooms have been known to induce altered states of consciousness, which has led to their use in spiritual and shamanic practices. Their use is illegal in the UK, so you should focus on magical mushrooms that aren’t psychedelics. Find out how to grow magic mushrooms at home that are magical because of their medicinal properties and not because they’re psychedelic here.

Growing mushrooms at home may sound like a daunting task, but it is actually relatively simple, especially if you are looking to grow magical mushrooms for their health benefits. The process requires minimal equipment, and with the right conditions, you can produce a substantial yield.

Why Are Magic Mushrooms Illegal in the UK?

Magic mushrooms contain psilocybin, which is a class A drug in the UK. This means growing magic mushrooms is illegal as well as to possess, produce, and supply psilocybin or any product that contains it. The government has classified psilocybin as a substance with no medical benefits and a high potential for abuse.

However, research has shown that psilocybin has many potential therapeutic uses. It has been known to help with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In countries where psilocybin is legal, it is used in therapeutic settings under the guidance of trained professionals – which is the only time it should be used.

Alternatives to Magic Mushrooms

If you are interested in the benefits of magic mushrooms but cannot use them due to legal restrictions, you can try mushroom supplements as an alternative. These supplements contain a range of beneficial compounds found in mushrooms, such as beta-glucans, which help support the immune system, aid your energy and fitness goals, and have a number of other possible benefits.

Mushroom supplements are legal and readily available in the UK, making them an accessible alternative to magic mushrooms. We have plenty of our own high-quality supplements here at The Magic Mushrooms!

Growing Magic Mushrooms at Home

Now that we have covered the legality and alternative options let’s move on to the process of growing mushrooms at home.

Prepare Your Grow Space

Once you have chosen your strain, you will need to prepare your grow space. You will need a clean and sterile area, away from direct sunlight and any sources of heat or cold. You can use a grow tent, a closet, or any other enclosed space.

Prepare Your Substrate

Next, you will need to prepare your substrate. The substrate is the material that the mushrooms will grow on. For magic mushroom grow spaces, the most common substrate is a mixture of vermiculite, brown rice flour, and water. These can be found year-round, perfect for growing your medicinal mushrooms during their individual seasons.

Mix these ingredients thoroughly in a bowl until you have a consistent, moist mixture. You can then place the mixture into jars or bags, leaving some room for the mushrooms to grow.

Inoculate Your Substrate

Once you have prepared your substrate, it is time to inoculate it with spores. Spores are tiny seeds that are the reproductive cells of mushrooms. You can purchase spores online or from a grow shop.

To inoculate your substrate, you will need to create a small hole in the jar or bag and place the spores inside. You can then cover the hole with tape and wait for the spores to germinate.

Incubate Your Substrate

After inoculating your substrate, you will need to incubate it. This process involves keeping your substrate in a warm and dark space, preferably at a temperature of around 21-24°C. You can use a heat mat or keep your jars or bags in a warm area of your home to incubate them.

During this time, the spores will begin to grow into mycelium, which is the root-like network that will eventually produce mushrooms.

Colonise Your Substrate

Once the mycelium has colonised the substrate, you can transfer it to a growing chamber. This can be a terrarium, a grow tent, or any other enclosed space with controlled humidity and temperature.

Make sure to keep your growing chamber clean and sterile and monitor the humidity and temperature regularly. You can use a humidifier to maintain the required humidity level, which is around 80-90%.

Harvest Your Mushrooms

After a few weeks of growing, your mushrooms will be ready to harvest. Pick them carefully, making sure to leave the base intact. You can then dry them in a dehydrator or in the oven at a low temperature.
